Amnesty International: Deliberate Targeting of Civilian Infrastructure

First-hand information gathered by recent Amnesty International research missions to Lebanon and Israel points to an Israeli policy of deliberate destruction of Lebanese civilian infrastructure during the recent conflict.

  1. From the WSJ:

The anti-Israel group Amnesty International has issued a report accusing the Jewish state of "war crimes." Blogger David Bernstein does a good job taking apart the report, noting, for example, that Amnesty International faults Israel for hitting military targets, such as bridges, roads, seaports and Beirut's international airport.

This news report offers another important counterbalance:

During the four week war Hezbollah fired 3,900 rockets at Israeli towns and cities with the aim of inflicting maximum civilian casualties.

The Israeli government says that 44 Israeli civilians were killed in the bombardments and 1,400 wounded.

AI has not issued a report accusing Hezbollah of war crimes.

The New York Times account, by contrast, quotes an Israeli official as rejecting the Amnesty International allegations, but it makes no mention of Hezbollah's unquestioned war crimes. In this sense, at least, the Times is more anti-Israel than the organization that produced the other news report--which, by the way, is al-Jazeera.

  2. anonymous,
You are mistaken, and you are either ignorant,or plain liar.

Please check the Lebanon/Israel Conflict on Amnensty's website.

If AI criticizes Israeli war crimes, that's because Israel has committed them. The Blemish Attack victimization act doesn't work on this blog; Good Luck somewhere else.

Why should I believe the Israeli government that has lied to its own people and disbelieve in Amnesty.

  3. A very exhaustive read! Thank you.

I have always considered AI as a reasonable source of infomation.

What a mess. 7000 targets in a country so small is excessive. A further 2500 targets engaged by Naval forces compounds the problem.

I beleive that Israels campaign is a textbook operation on how to defeat a nation state. Unfortunatly they where not engaging a nation state but a terrorist organisation.

I find AI's report highly plausable, but do question why more was not written on HZ operational tactics.

In any case it would be best for PM Olmert, and HZ to disappear. Olmert because has done more damage to Israel than HZ did, and HZ due to their ideology and lack of Government control.

  4. Amnesty International . . . the same organization that labeled the Guantanamo detention center as the "gulag of our time." Let's do the comparison:

The Gulag was a system of Soviet slave labor camps for millions of political dissidents. These camps tended to have high fatality rates.

Guantanamo houses 600 head chopping holy warriors that have to endure the harsh elements of the Caribean climate.

Fadi, if AI is your source of information, that explains why your point of view is so screwed up.

  5. Anon,
As much as I do not like AI's report on Gitmo, I like the idea of Gitmo even less.

We have held some 400+ people in that tropical compound for almost 3 years. The detainees' have had no legal representation, no due process, and no hearing as to their status. This administration has invented new terms for the people held their, in order to subvert the principles of Law.

This concerns me in that our country is not adhearing to it principles. It should be of great concern to you also!

What gitmo needs is the light of due process. You should demand it because; as in the words of Benjamin Franklin

"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

  6. Emory,

I am stunned. You might be very surprised to hear this from me, but I bow in respect for this statement.

One should not give up a principle to tackle an exception, that exactly is the end of the principle itself.

Abiding by the rule of law is a difficult task, whether one is implementing it, or falling under its jurisdiction.

600 head chopping warriors, could in the future be 600 tongues that speak the truth, or 600 hands that rise in opposition. One never runs out of accusations, that's exactly why Law should prevail. It alone decides what is right and what is not.

Christ - for many symbolizing the son og God - was himself accused and criminalized. It's easy to throw accusation and make assumptions, but the greatness of any nation is how it rises above injury to uphold its greatest principles, in the case of America:
Freedom, equality, and the rule of law.
